Discussion group: enthusiasm for Jesus Christ (DE)

The youth have difficulty in maintaining interest in church activities if they don’t have enthusiasm for Jesus Christ. What do the young people understand by “enthusiasm for Jesus Christ”? What exactly inspires me in Jesus Christ? How does it happen? What makes it difficult? How can we live this enthusiasm? These questions will be considered in a hosted session of information exchange.

New in the congregation: Where is my place? (DE)

I’ve finally found a place to study, or a new job. I’ve already got an apartment. Everything’s fine, except in the church it’s not going so well. Somehow I don’t belong there. No one notices me and everything is quite different. Therefore, I don’t need to go any more: no one would miss me anyway. That’s the sort of way the stories begin from young people, when they become disillusioned and withdraw. What are the possibilities and strategies we could use to make the new congregation become a “feel good” congregation?

The youth delegate: how must we be? (DE)

The youth delegate is one of the nicest tasks in the Church. At the same time, many expectations are placed upon youth delegates by the youth, their parents, the Church and those personally close to the delegates. In this workshop we will express our own expectations and compare them with the expectations of others. We will develop an action plan of how we, as youth delegates should be and want to be.

Not really so difficult: Organisation of youth leisure activities (DE)

How do I organise an event, for example a youth excursion? What must I be aware of? Who can help me? Will I manage it? These and further questions will be dealt with in this workshop, before the participants work in groups to plan events in various projects. At the end, they will be revealed and evaluated by the participants. The aim is to encourage the youth in organising events in their home youth groups.

What is the Bible text telling me: Divine service preparation together (DE)

“Divine service is the activity of God upon human beings and a work of human beings for God.” (NAC Catechism 12.1) For this to “function” as a positive experience, a substantial sermon must be delivered, on the one hand. On the other hand, attendees must be prepared for the service and the word of God beforehand. In this workshop we will work together on a passage from the Bible and its context, so that we can draw a concrete and practical core statement from it.

You determine the stage of your life (DE)

We deliberately learn different feelings, different roles, different times and with all our senses. We quickly, playfully and easily learn to test the changes, to go beyond boundaries, to understand others and to go further in our development. The theatre’s effectiveness to personally and socially learn was already well known in antique times. The stage of your life is determined by you, as you learn to act and discover yourself.

Confirmed, and what now? (DE)

We would like to discuss with you how good preparations with the youth, can be achieved. Would it be possible to interleave the activities of children and the youth? What are your own experiences? Where has there been success? Where are the boundaries? Preparation for the Confirmation, sponsorship from the youth group, practical work in the congregation and communal activities all help to enthuse young Christians for their time as the youth.

Preaching: type and requirement (DE)

Demands made on preaching in divine services are increasing. Not only must the serving officiant have rhetorical and didactic competences, he must also have a deep theological understanding. The necessity is for a rich, well structured and vibrant sermon. The presentation will discuss the expectations of divine service attendees, concepts and the effort required in preparing the divine service. The question as to whether the divine service always fulfills expectations will be elaborated together.

There is a time for everything: Work-Life-Church-Balance (DE)

Voluntary activity within the Church is subject to varied and increasing demands. After a short stimulating presentation, the question will be asked what can, and should, be done to reduce the demands made on volunteers, and avoid the subsequent phenomena of overload and burnout. Participants will be able to add their contributions by discussing what is necessary and sensible for resilience in this voluntary work.

Do you know your pastoral carer? (DE)

What do you wish from a pastoral care visit? Is the concept of pastoral care still valid in our time? These, and other questions, have been asked by the speakers of this workshop to church ministers and their congregation members. They will discuss the results in a presentation, and would like to hear your thoughts on the subject.

Conflict: Risks and Chances (DE)

Fulfilled needs lead to future-orientated solutions – or, unfulfilled needs are the gravediggers of our conversation. Participants will be introduced to methods of conflict regulation. There will be an introduction to the five phases in mediating. Solutions can be better than compromising and we can often find something good to pick on in the emotional “mud-slinging”. The programme is rounded off with inter-active sequences of a mediation.

The preacher looking at the peoples' mouths (DE)

Martin Luther wanted to “look at the crowd’s mouth” as he made his translation of the Bible. His wish was to make the statements in the Bible as understandable as possible for the people of his time. Do young people today understand the words and pictures of ages past? The aim of this workshop is to define specific biblical terminology and also “New Apostology”, to analyse them and to try putting them in an understandable language of today.

Have self confidence! For women and girls (DE)

You don’t have to justify a “No”. You don’t have to hide your light under a bushel. Be proud of yourself and of that which you have already achieved; with all your strengths and weaknesses; with trust in yourself and in God; as a young girl or a grown up woman. With this workshop we will support you to show more self confidence. We will theorise on the basis of the “10 Gebote für starke Frauen” (10 Commandments for strong women), and will follow this with a practical part, with simple exercises in self defence and in trust.

Hardly ended and already forgotten: retaining more from the church service (DE)

Daily life begins for a Christian when the church service ends. In each service we receive a new impulse to take forward into our daily lives. Unfortunately, they are soon lost in the daily chaos. Thanks to the use of the mnemonic technique we can easily retain key elements and phrases from the services. This gives us a personal retentive follow-up of the church service and provides the opportunity for us to talk more about our faith. With a bit of practice, everyone would be able to apply this method to good value in everyday life.

The youth are confronted with many new challenges when they receive a commission in the Church. Can I live my life in my youth as the ministry expects? Can I say “yes” to the ministry? How do my family and friends react? What makes it so difficult for me? What do I wish for? What does it have to do with enthusiasm for Jesus Christ?

Get to understand your sisters better (DE)

Women are different than men. We all know that from our daily lives. This also applies to the environment of the Church and often leads to uncertainty or to problems. In this workshop we will firstly look at the differences in the communication and in the attitudes of men and women, by means of classic “misunderstandings”. Participants will then have the chance to discuss their own experiences in small groups, and to put their questions and problems forward and try to find possible solutions.

Leadership in the Bible: effective, enthusiastic and authentic (DE)

Leadership is a very interesting and complex subject. Many concepts and theories compete with each other, and not all leaders appear to have the competence to lead. There are many elements in the Bible and in the work of Jesus which could demonstrate good leadership today. In our presentation we will examine some biblical impulses on “best practice in leadership” in depth. A study of the Bible shows that new perspectives can be found to lead and enthuse others more effectively, especially when serving in the Church.

Discussion group: contributing around the church service (DE)

Church services don’t just consist of a sermon. How could active participation in and around the Church look like? What options are there officially, for example in the services for the youth? What can I do myself to make the divine service experience lead to enthusiasm for Jesus Christ? What makes it sometimes difficult? What do I wish for? Is there anything else which could be of help?

Youth group sessions – in or out? (DE)

Do youth group sessions fit in these times, or are they a relic of the past? There are topics which are up-to-date and well organised for discussion in youth groups – guaranteed! Even so, the numbers attending are dwindling. What would be a good reason for you to attend again? Two experienced youth group experts would like to find a way, and bring some ideas together with the participants, to make youth group sessions a plus again for everyone. Simple and uncomplicated.
