Better sermons ↑
Preaching is the subject of three workshops, including sermon preparations, using word choice fitting to our times and one workshop under the title “The preacher looking at the peoples' mouths”. Apostle Volker Kühnle takes up this statement from Martin Luther, for whom it was important to use words that people could clearly understand. This is a challenge which all ministers still face today: language and its comprehension are always on the change. Can the younger generation equate with words and pictures from older times? The workshop will define and analyse biblical terms, such as “New Apostolicisms” and try to put them in an understandable language of today, without altering their meaning.
Congregational life ↑
What can congregations do to make (young) newcomers feel at home? A workshop tries to find an answer to this question and four other workshops consider answers to Christian leadership on the basis of the Bible, conflict management, strategies against overloading and burnout and the differences in communication between men and women.
Retaining information from the divine service ↑
You are sitting in the service and you would like to take three or four key points from the sermon with you into your daily routine. On the way home you can just about recall one of these points from your memory. Who hasn't experienced that? Workshop participants can learn to store the key elements in their memory with help of the mnemonic technique.
Working with the youth ↑
Several workshops will offer guidance to youth delegates. Hand tools will be developed for the work in the youth groups, guidance given to help integration of the confirmands, in organising youth leisure activities and explaining the physical, emotional and social backgrounds behind puberty. One workshop will deal explicitly with youth group meetings, where participants can develop ideas, with the speakers, how youth meetings can be made enjoyable for everyone.
Roles of the youth ↑
Special consideration of the youth is given in the workshops to provide pastoral care in the modern age, or in divine service preparation. The youth could help to formulate a youth version of the Catechism, or to use their creativity in adding fitting illustrations.
Several larger forums are also planned, to discuss central issues. Three youth conferences will take place in Italian, Spanish and French to try and define what the youth consider their interpretation of “enthusiasm for Jesus Christ” is. What are the factors which help to encourage this enthusiasm and what are those which dampen it? How can encouraging factors be strengthened and dampening factors be avoided or compensated for?
Hosted discussions in the German language will consider
the following topics:
- enthusiasm for Jesus Christ: what is that?
- congregational life between 10 and 100: integrating the young and the elderly in the congregation
- the youth as church ministers
- pastoral care in times of the youth
- assisting around the divine service
- Closing forum: And what next? Active help in the congregation and the church district
