Faith and career -
a contradiction?

To pursue a career, you have to be ruthless and selfish, so the prejudice. How does faith fit in? In her talk, Stephanie Tritt, Professor and Chief Physician of Radiology and Neuro-Radiology, gave many tips on career planning as well as ideas on how to reconcile being a Christian and being a boss.

For Stephanie Tritt, one thing is certain: "Career and faith go together very well. “Of course I align my leadership behaviour with Christian values - even if sometimes it is incorrect behaviour and strong elbows, of all things, that make people successful. Here are three aspects why faith for Tritt is important also in her professional life:

A profession as a vocation - but not as the meaning of life!

What happens if you don't get the job you want and there are many obstacles in your way? Even with willpower and ambition, many things cannot be planned and influenced. It is therefore all the more important that your self-image is not only based on professional success and that you don’t expect to find the meaning of life in your career. "A bank account and a title can't be taken to the grave," says Tritt. Faith increases your awareness for the things with lasting importance.

A resting place in the career jungle

Faith also helps to deal with situations where things are not going so well. It can provide comfort and confidence. "I involve God in my planning and ask him to help when I have to take decisions," says Tritt. Then it is easier to accept it if things don't turn out the way you wanted them to. "But of course you are not automatically more successful just because you are a believer," Tritt emphasizes. "It is not God who makes your career.”

A haven of peace in the bustle of everyday life

Finding time for attending church - especially on Wednesday evenings - is not easy in stressful everyday life. Stephanie Tritt recommends to consciously use divine services as a breather. "For me this is a time of inner peace, where I can concentrate on the essential", says Tritt. She looks in a similar way at volunteer work, which for her is an enriching experience: "You meet other people and exchange ideas beyond professional topics. All this broadens the horizon and is a source of strength."
