Services and devotionals - plus concerts, lectures, panel discussions and workshops, followed by exhibitions and involvement activities - the offer is enormous; time, however, is limited. The magazine spirit helps to make it clearer by its overview of events at the International Youth Convention (IYC). The second part of this series deals with the so-called Empowerment Center, the heart of the International Youth Convention.
What remains after the days in Düsseldorf? What enthusiasm from the IYC filters into the congregations? How can the joy of the IYC be sustained? The contents planning group has been considering these questions, and the result was the Empowerment Center, which can be found in Hall 7.1. Young people, ministers and youth workers will meet in workshops, lectures and discussion rounds, to jointly explore how young people can continue to be inspired for Christ and to help in actively shaping the future of the church.
Hall 7 - the Empowerment-Center
Better preaching: Three workshops deal with the sermon, including sermon preparation and a contemporary style of language fitting for the sermon, including one with the title The priest "who listents to what others have to say". Apostle Volker Kühnle takes up this statement of Martin Luther, for whom it was important to formulate his sermon in such a way that the people understood him. This is the challenge facing ministers today: language and language comprehension are constantly evolving. Are words and images from old times clear to young people? The workshop wants to define and analyse biblical terms as well as "New Apostolicisms" - and try to convert them into a language that is comprehensible in the here and now, without changing the meaning.
Life in the congregation: What can the congregations’ members do to make (young) newcomers feel comfortable? A workshop will try to answer this question. Four more workshops are dedicated to Christian leadership based on the Bible, conflict management, strategies against overload and burnout, and different communication between men and women.
Memory retention of the divine service: You are in a divine service and want to retain at least three, four of the thoughts expressed in the sermon. But already on the way home, the only thing that you can remember is the core theme. Sounds familiar? With the help of the mnemonic technique, workshop participants learn to memorise the most important key terms.
Working with young people: Several workshops are offered for youth workers. Tools for working with young people will be developed there; information to assist in the integration of confirmands or for the organisation of youth leisure activities and explanations about the physical, emotional and social backgrounds of puberty. A particular special workshop will cover the subject of youth meetings, in which the participants will be included in creating ideas to make youth meetings a win-win situation for everyone.
Looking through the eyes of the youth: a youthful view is called for in workshops to devise contemporary pastoral care or divine service preparation. Young people can help to formulate a youthful version of the Catechism or contribute their creativity to its illustration.
There are also several larger forums planned on central topics. Three youth conferences in Italian, Spanish and French will try to define what young people think of as "enthusiasm for Jesus Christ". What factors promote this enthusiasm, and what inhibits it? How can supportive factors be strengthened, and how can inhibitory factors be prevented or compensated?
Hosted discussion groups in German are dedicated to the following topics:
- Enthusiasm for Jesus Christ, what is that?
- Life in the congregation 10 to 100: Integrate young and old in the congregation
- Young ministers
- pastoral care in times of the youth
- Active participation in the congregation and in the district
Level 7.0 is also worth a visit: In escape rooms groups of visitors can either solve biblical riddles or follow in Luther's footsteps. You will also find the Our Father room here (see pages 24 and 25). Chillout zones and rooms in which ministers are available for pastoral talks throughout the day are set up on level 7.2.
