85 young helpers of the New Apostolic Church pitched in to add their part in the “Dreck-weg-Tag” (rubbish clearing day) in Düsseldorf, to spruce up the city before the International Youth Convention 2019. The contingent from the New Apostolic Church was the largest in number from all the schools, organisations and private initiatives which took part in the activity organised by Pro Düsseldorf. 32 tons of rubbish was collected in total across the city.
More than 11,000 participants had turned up to help in the 20th “Dreck-weg-Tag” in North Rhine-Westphalia’s capital city according to the organisers, Pro Düsseldorf. Among the helpers were 24 youth from and around Zweibrücken, who had travelled especially from the Rhineland-Palatinate to bring the weekend with the Düsseldorf youth. Their help in the “Dreck-weg-Tag” in Düsseldorf was just a part of a two day pre-event of the International Youth Convention.
First the work and then the fun
The Düsseldorf youth had planned a two day programme, ending with a divine service on Sunday morning, for all the New Apostolic participants in the “Dreck-weg-Tag”. The youth were dressed in the official IYC 2019 t-shirts as they started to gather the plastic and metal refuse left lying on the Paradiesstrand, a favourite open air location of party and grill fans on the banks of the river Rhine.
Their three hour clearing-up efforts were rewarded with a picnic. The Düsseldorf youth took the initiative after their midday snack and led the helpers in two groups on a tour of the Landtag (state parliament), Medienhafen (city harbour) and the Altstadt (old town). Most of the young visitors from the church district of Saar-Pfalz had come to the region’s capital city for the first time and enjoyed seeing the city from the perspective as young visitors.
Report on the state of preparations
An evening programme and overnight accommodation in the Derendorf church had been planned by the Düsseldorf youth for their visitors from Zweibrücken. They reached their destination late on the Saturday afternoon, following the big clean-up help and guided city tour.
On Sunday morning they drove to the New Apostolic Church in Flingern, where a divine service was held for the youth of the district and for the participants of the “Dreck-weg-Tag”. They were subsequently given a report on the current state of preparations for the International Youth Convention, which is taking place over the long Ascension Day weekend on the Düsseldorf Messe site.
