French-German cooperation:
Flowers for the altar decoration

Apostle Jeannot Leibfried (France) explains how an idea of two young sisters in faith from Metz (France) became a challenge for many senior church members around Düsseldorf.

As members of the planning staff group 3 "Arena: Contents - Events" Apostle Jeannot Leibfried and Bishop Peter Jeram (Austria) were responsible for the preparation of the Sunday divine service. At the beginning of the planning, they were not aware of the fact that this would also include the design of the flowers at the altar area. "We underestimated this job a little bit", admits the apostle - never before he had taken care of altar flower arrangements. When the extend of this task became clear to him, he asked two creative young sisters from Metz (France). "We, as French people, are allowed to design the altar decoration, will you help me?" was his question.

Hands and continents made of flowers

After the first brainstorming session, for the two young ladies it was clear: the hands from the IYC logo and the internationality of the Youth Convention should be repeated in the altar design. The main idea was: 10,000 crepe flowers - after all, the altar decoration has to survive many hours, possibly at summer temperatures.

The two girls made a 3D model of their design, which Apostle Leibfried then presented to the planning staff group. After the group enthusiastically accepted the project, the decisive question arose: Where do we get 10,000 crepe flowers from? At first, no solution could be found, but then the retired district evangelist Reinhold Wegener from Düsseldorf stepped in.

He activated church members from several congregations around Düsseldorf who agreed to make the crepe flowers by hand. Also, the 85-year-old sister in faith, who in the congregation of Jülich is known only as Aunt Ilse, wanted to contribute to the IYC and made hundreds of flowers. The French youths made the manual for the flowers available to the seniors as Youtube videos. This enabled the seniors to create both the flowers and the individual parts of the altar decoration, partly in home work, partly in seniors' circles and also on site in the Arena. "This was a great help," says Apostle Leibfried.
