The programme for the International Youth Convention will have an early start, as early as 8 a.m. Some of the events will run until after midnight. For organisational reasons, participation in these programme items will only be possible then for those who will be sleeping on the Messe premises. The organising team of the International Youth Convention are now sending out information about this to all group leaders.
More than 27,000 participants, employees and helpers have currently registered for the IYC. The information we have received shows that more than the half of the participants have chosen not to use the youth camps on the Messe premises as their sleeping accommodation. This is likely to create significant challenges to be faced.
Evening programme
Those who don’t wish to stay overnight on the exhibition premises must take lengthy travel time to and from Düsseldorf into account. For some, this will mean difficulty in staying for the programme running over the evenings. For instance, on Friday evening, after the pop oratorio (8 p.m. – 10 p.m.), is the “NAC Club Night” (11 p.m. – 2 a.m.) in Hall no. 5. On Saturday evening, following the Arena event (7:30 p.m. – 9 p.m.), an emotional open air event on the exhibition grounds (10 p.m. – midnight) is planned. The Hall of Encounters in Hall 6 will also be open each day until midnight and, running in parallel, there will be more live music on the programme. The mornings will begin from 8 a.m. with the first events – for instance various devotionals.
It would be very sad if the youth didn’t have the chance to be there because of timetable restrictions of buses and trains from greater distances across the region.
Changing overnight accommodation
The International Youth Convention can be a very impressive occasion for the youth, leaving long-lasting memories, when they remain to sleep on the premises. Furthermore, it will be much cheaper for them: travel time will be avoided and it will provide much more flexibility in relaxing and enjoying all the events on the programme. We therefore strongly recommend that the youth take advantage of the sleeping spaces available in the youth camps.
It is possible for groups which are willing to change their overnight accommodation to the youth camps to do so by 21st April (even when they have already paid). This applies only to complete groups, including respective group leaders. In exceptional circumstances the team are prepared to split the registration of a group. Such requests must be made in writing, giving details, to registration@ijt2019.org.
All others are requested to plan sufficient buffer time, to arrive early enough and to plan the return journey to their accommodation so that the youth are also able to be at the later events on the IYC programme.
Arriving by bus and rail
Travel to the exhibition site should be made using public transport where possible. The city tram service (Stadtbahn) stops directly at the Northern entrance (Eingangsbereich Nord) and takes 20 minutes to reach the main railway station (Hauptbahnhof). The service will extend its operating timetable to the tram stop “Arena/Messe” especially for the IYC. Detailed running times are still to be published. The Stadtbahn is particularly recommended for your arrival, as it will avoid longer walking distances. Also, the passes for participants provide the opportunity for free travel by bus and rail throughout the entire regional public transport network of the VRR (Verkehrsverbunds Rhein-Ruhr) to Düsseldorf.
Registering on arrival
When arriving for the first time group leaders must register themselves at the Eingangsbereich Nord and then collect the armbands for his/her group members in the logistic centre. Therefore, it is recommended that those sleeping at home arrive to register on Thursday. Should groups first arrive by car on Friday morning for the opening event at 11 a.m., they should reckon with a time of at least 2.5 hours to register and then gain access to the Arena (including the way by foot from the parking area to the Messe).
Arriving by car
The car park lies outside, and to the North of the Messe premises. A shuttle bus service is planned to be in operation from there. During peak demand periods this service may become over congested. About 45 minutes must be planned if walking to the Messe from the car park, which is why very early arrival is important, especially on Friday morning, to complete the registration process and to make the way to the Arena.
Arriving by bus
If you are arriving by bus, there will be the opportunity to get off in the near vicinity of the Messe halls. Delays can be expected here, as we are expecting many buses to arrive. It is therefore urgently recommended that bus passengers make their first arrivals and registration on Thursday.
