The fourth planning executive session was focussed on the young peoples’ interests for the International Youth Convention 2019. Youth counsellors representing each of the European district Churches intensively scrutinised the survey results which were returned by the young Christians.
The International Youth Convention 2019 is essentially to be a product designed by young people. That was the consensus of the planning executive which met for the fourth time on 21st and 22nd September 2017, which is why the group so intensively studied the results of the survey made by young New Apostolic Christians. The planners had asked the young Christians in April and May what contents, activities and music they expected to find in the programme for 2019.
Pop music for the younger participants
The results were scientifically evaluated and are representative of the German-speaking districts. One conclusion: popular music is of more interest to younger than to older people. Young people aged from the mid 20s onward prefer a music style with an established religious context.
Differences were also seen in the wish for activities tending toward physical motivation: more interest was shown here by the younger than the older participants. These hoped for rather more focussed contents.
Much interest in the divine service
In the question of individual programme items the most interest shown across all age groups was in the divine service, and again all survey participants showed equal interest in theological topics, such as the return of Christ and life beyond death.
No differences were noted in any of the survey topics between the sexes: males and females showed equal interests in the various choices.
Take the expectations seriously
Following the presentation of the survey results, Bishop Peter Johanning, a member of the Communications planning group, cautioned the meeting to take the wishes of the youth seriously. “Give more weight to the survey than to your own personal opinions,” he said. He further encouraged the Youth Convention planners to consider unusual ideas in the manner of the youth. “The young people want to be inspired in faith and the Church. It is up to us to create that foundation.”
The results of the expectations survey are now being analysed by the planning groups and will be taken into account in further planning processes. Specific suggestions and ideas which have also been made in the survey will be incorporated in the programme concept.
The results of the survey will gradually be published in the coming weeks.
